Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt McCormick.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From a young age, I decided I wanted to be a history teacher and nobody could convince me otherwise. I graduated high school to pursue a degree in history education and I pursued this degree for two and a half years. I reached a point where I had no motivation and I was miserable on the career path I was on. I did not feel fulfilled, but everyone kept telling me to just wait until I graduated and everything would feel better in a career job. I continued to go through the motions of school which led to my grades slipping and my motivation dwindling more and more. I finally looked in the mirror one day and realized I was still pursuing 15 year old me’s dream and not 20 year old me’s dream. At this point I was scared as I felt like I was too far along to change the path my life was on. I had an interest in the business world, but I had no clue what that looked like. It was uncomfortable in every way, but I decided to switch to a marketing major as I knew the history education path was just not for me. I had many people close to me ask what my plan was with my change to a marketing major, and the scariest part was that I could not give them an answer. I had no clue what I was going to do, I was just trying to keep an open mind and look for opportunities. I started to realize I had skills that were beneficial for the world of marketing and sales, so I really started digging into that. I did everything I could to find opportunity and to network in order to jumpstart this unknown journey. It was a process like anything in life, but in a matter of a year I created connections I would have never thought I made. I was hired for my first internship in November of 2025 where I was heading marketing for beach rental properties. I have received more internships since as I am now doing marketing and sales on the banking side. I was able to become the Vice President of my chapter in AMA which is the most prominent marketing organization in the nation. I became the Vice President and Co-founder of my university’s Sales Club which allows me to be stamped in history at my university. I have also conducted a research project that is in the process of completely changing the way my university operates as a whole. This research project entails our university switching to a four day academic work week to use Fridays as applied learning and opportunity for students, and I am at the forefront of this movement. I finally found the motivation that once felt like it would never be found again. A lot of people have told me that I am “lucky” because of these opportunities I have. That statement has been an anomaly to me because each and every one of these opportunities did not come to me because of luck, but hours upon hours of motivation, consistency, and finding myself. This showed me that opportunity seems like luck to those that did not witness how hard you worked. So much has come my way because of my determination, and I find joy in knowing this is only the beginning of my story.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In many stories there is an event, person, or scenario of some sort that stops people from being successful. My story is unique in that I was the antagonist of my own story. My lack of motivation and drive was causing me to spiral in my academics. I was complacent which is one of the worst things you can be in this world. Being complacent is comfortable, which is easy. I coached junior high basketball for four years and there was one thing I always said to my players that applies in all walks of life. “If being great was easy, everyone would be great.” Being successful requires you to step away from comfortability. The business world is no different and it took me a long time to realize and embrace this idea of being uncomfortable to be successful. I currently do everything I can to advocate for stepping away from complacency to those who are in the shoes I was once in.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a marketing major with a minor in accounting, a minor in sport and business study, and an undergraduate certificate in professional sales. I am a junior at the University of Southern Indiana and I have made a name for myself on this campus and in this community by being someone who has strong connections and is involved within the community. I plan to pursue a full time career in sales or marketing. Another thing about me is that I am someone who is a big fan of sports which actually helps me in my career field. Part of the reason I have accomplished as much as I have is due to my competitiveness and wanting to be the best. That mentality causes me to continue pushing forward for future opportunities when most are content with current results.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most essential quality I possess is my people skills. I have always been told that I am good at talking, and I do not think many people are cognitive about how talking is a skill that not all people have. Being able to clearly and confidently communicate goes a long way in not only business, but in life. As someone pursuing sales, communication is one of the most prominent qualities I believe one should have. I also feel as if I understand people on a personal level. What I mean by this is I can relate to people from all different backgrounds and walks of life which allows me to create more genuine connections with people. Another quality about myself that I view as essential is my mentality and outlook on life. I am someone who is always in a good mood and full of energy, and this radiates to those around me the majority of the time. One of my favorite athletes of all time and someone I have always looked up to is the Los Angeles Lakers legend, Magic Johnson, and he was someone who was able to inspire others with his attitude. There was a sports analyst one time that was talking about Magic Johnson and said, “With Magic, every day is larger than life, and tomorrow is even bigger.” This quote has always stayed with me and it was the type of statement that I strived for people to say about me. I just appreciate every day I have, and the opportunity I have to live. I do everything in my power to create an atmosphere that brings joy and inspires those around me.
